When people think of pet play, they might automatically equate it to furries. Or they might think of the stereotypical Japanese anime kitten girls. Or maybe they might even think that it means a desire to have sexual play with actual animals. Well, I am here to tell you what pet play actually is, and what it means to me!
Pet play is basically animal role play. It is when someone desires to act like an animal in either some or all aspects. It encompasses all types of animals from real animals like dogs and cats to imaginary ones like dragons and unicorns. Like anything else in the kink world, there is not a “right” or “wrong” way to do it. There is a spectrum of the roles that you will see people play. Sometimes people will be an anthropomorphic animal with characteristics of both humans and the animal they are playing.
Others will completely turn into the animal in all aspects, such as walking on all fours, eating from a pet dish, and not talking at all. There is so much variety and choice to be made when picking a pet. What species, what age, what accessories to wear (such as ears, a tail, mitts), how to act, and if sexual play will happen while in the role.
So that’s a short summary of what pet play is, but what is NOT pet play? Pet play is NOT bestiality. Any sexual activity that involves real biological pets is not accepted in the community, and anyone that does so will be reported and ostracized.
Pet play is also not just about sex. Some people will want to have sex in their animal role, and other people do not. Both decisions are perfectly valid and depends on the consent of the individuals involved.
Now, about myself. I am a 36-year-old cis female who is pansexual. I have been part of the kink community for 5 ½ years now, and polyamorous for the same amount of time. I didn’t know too much about pet play until I met my partner Apollo. We have been together for just over a year now. He was very heavily into pet play and identifies as a pup and has been into that lifestyle for about 4 years. I was always curious about pet play, so we talked a lot about it. He educated me and I also searched through many websites to learn as much as I could. The more I learned, the more I wanted to try it. The more I tried it, the more involved I wanted to be. Since he was already a pup, I took on the role of his handler.
Essentially that means that I am the one who takes care of him while he is being a pup. I play with him, groom him, teach him commands, and look after his overall well-being. I always have so much fun playing with him! It is just like having a real puppy but without all the mess and having to look after it 24/7. We also do have sex while he is a pup and let me tell you that is super hot and aligns with all my biggest kinks and fetishes!
I also have been interested in playing the role of an animal and am going to start experimenting with it. I already have a few things figured out but will need to confirm the little details once I start playing. My animal role will be that of a female Alpha wolf bitch. She is an adult and is only somewhat tame. She is a guard wolf who stands guard for all the other pets who are playing together, and guards a young girl named little. She is only loyal to 3 people currently: little, little’s Miss, and my Master. I already have a beautiful tail in the colour of my fur (as seen in the pic) and will be making ears to match. Still trying to figure out what other accessories and clothes to wear for my wolf. I am excited to see how this role will come to be and evolve over time!
Why do I engage in pet play? First and foremost, it is fun! I have always loved animals but am highly allergic to anything that sheds. So, this gives me an opportunity to have a “pet” without a lot of the responsibilities that go along with have a “real” pet. Seeing your pet learn, and playing with them, taking them for walks, and feeding them treats is great!
Pet play is also a way to get into a different state of mind. It can be nice to take a break and not have to think like a human for once. I have always loved role playing, so getting to play a wolf is going to be super awesome! Plus, I think I look damn cute with a tail and ears!
I also love educating people about anything I am passionate about. Apollo and I, along with our friends little and Miss, run a pet play group. We just started it and have lots of fun ideas and are looking forward to seeing it grow! We are going to be organizing and running a Pet Play 101 event for anyone into or curious about the world of pet play in the next month or so.
