Title: Wolf Tails
Platform: PC [on the Steam Store]
Price: $11.49 CAD
Game Length: It took me 4 hours, over two play-throughs, for 100% completion.
Summary: You, the protagonist, arrive at your cabin during a brutal snowstorm to find a cute wolf-girl, Mirari, hiding out and nearly freezing to death in your storeroom. Taking her in, you feed, clothe, and warm her, saving her life in the process. Soon after you’re visited by her hot headed protector, Fuyu, who reveals that the girl you saved is the princess of a pack of half-humans that she must return to so that she can take on the responsibilities of being their next leader. Mirari wants nothing to do with it though, and hopes that by staying with you while the storm outside rages on she can convince Fuyu it’s better for her, and the pack, if somebody else took the lead. Wholesome, adorable sexiness ensues!
Level of Lewdness: Moderate
Is It Sex Positive? Yes! Surprisingly, very!
Oh thank fuck! Following my super disappointing play-through of the last erotic visual novel I got, I was really apprehensive about given literally any more of these games a shot, but I’m glad I did because Wolf Tails from Razzart Visual is seriously a fucking delight, in every conceivable way, from start to finish.
I picked the “male” route (there’s a “female” option as well), which did irk me some, because I really wish games let me just have a penis or vagina, or whatever, without necessarily gendering me as the narrator. As a non-binary gamer who really digs these erotica games that would make a huge difference in my overall enjoyment of experiences like this if it could just be “penis person” without being referred to as a dude all the time. That being said, playing a “male” protagonist wasn’t too bad this time around as, luckily, the game mostly focused on developing the two wolf-girls, Mirari and Fuyu, while the protagonist mostly just served as a foil for their story.
It’s a pretty short erotic visual novel overall. I finished my first play-through in about 2-and-a-half-hours and I focused on the Fuyu relationship track because she is obviously the best wolfie! Not only did it play out very wholesomely, chock full of sweet moments as you both learn to open up to one another and feel safe being vulnerable and authentic together, but it was also really great seeing how Fuyu’s bond with Mirari transcended more traditional social norms, veering into some really powerful intimacy and vulnerability together.
Framing this was a surprisingly detailed amount of world building that delved into how humans and anthropomorphic beings exist in the same world together, how their cultures differentiate, and why you should care about any of that to begin with.
Taking the Fuyu track also had a LOT of really A+ consent guided sexy times. A major focal point is on how she’s in heat (yay!), which could have quickly gone the route of the protagonist taking advantage of her situation at every turn in some pretty fucked up ways. But I’m happy to report: that doesn’t happen! Instead he is cognizant of her inability to fully consent and mindful of wanting to have discussions with her about her bodily autonomy and needs before doing anything.
That being said he does “help her out” one night when she’s particularly revved up with some very giving oral, though I was pleasantly surprised when the scene ended having just been focused entirely on Fuyu’s pleasure with no further advances from the narrator once her urges had been satiated.
Honestly, all of the sex, sexual tension, flirting, and affections scenes were thoroughly enjoyable and, unlike some of these sort of games, none of those scenes felt gross, exploitative, or manipulative in nature.
The ending though… what a letdown.
After experiencing it with Fuyu, I had to look up the other and, sadly, they both kind of suck IMHO.
Whether you ultimately chose Mirari or Fuyu, your conclusion is essentially monogamous marital bliss with your now domesticated housewife.
Which, like, fine, I guess but that’s booooring! They’re fucking WOLF girls! The game could have gone in all sort of creative routes with it’s conclusion so it’s kind of a bummer that it ultimately ends on a bit of a bland, typical conclusion. Like, why didn’t you run off with Mirari to explore and fuck all around the world, teaching her about human culture and sharing in cute moments together along the way? Or, how about staying in the woods with Fuyu to learn about her warrior ways while continuing to grow as individuals and lovers?
Why’d it have to be marriage and babies? Bah.
Also, why couldn’t I pick both of them!? I know this is kind of nitpicking and part of a larger discussion of queer inclusivity in games but it’s always so frustrating when you see potential for some wholesome polyamory and then your just outright denied it because: NO! Monogamy! It’s especially frustrating here because it wouldn’t have even been a stretch given that both Mirari and Fuyu show a great deal of affection, care, and comfort with each other, and even some playful flirtation and sexual tension (I mean the hot springs scene… right!?), so, it would have totally made sense if in the end you were able to have a happy little triad with them both!
Oh well. The search of a sexy polyamorous game continues.
Regardless of those few little criticisms though, I still really loved Wolf Girls! It was cute, fun, endearing, sweet, silly, sexy, and the perfect length for a visual novel like this. Just wish it was a little more non-tradition in it’s overall approach.
I highly recommend it for those seeking something sexy and cute all at once!
